This is the first year I attended this event. And I almost missed it because I was feeling a bit tired after a long day’s work. My photography group had a “meet up” this year, and the focus was on this event… and since it has been a while since I went to one, I figured I should go. To be honest I wasn’t expecting for the Floating Lantern Ceremony to be as big and crowded as it was. Unfortunately I didn’t get to meet up with everybody else, so I decided to just make my way to the water by myself. It took a bit to get there but was definitely worth it. Another thing that took me by surprise was that there were a lot of photographers. If I didn’t know any better I would have said that every single person with a DSLR was at the eventJ. I didn’t get a chance to move around much because it was too crowded and since I was on the water I didn’t want to take the chance to swap out my lens… but I thought I captured what I wanted.
On a more serious note… three particular people stood out. The first was a lady wearing a kimono. On the photo I captured below… It seemed as if she was praying/speaking into the lantern just before she placed it on the water. The other two were the kids right next to me. I felt moved… Some people were crying and others were smiling as they release the lantern… It was a fitting gesture… to remind all of us the many sacrifice… to symbolize all that was lost… and the future we all gained because of their sacrifice. Though I always keep my fallen brother in arms in my prayers… Next year I will definitely be prepared to make the gesture and join the ceremony.
Every Memorial Day thousands of people gather at Ala Moana Beach Park for the Lantern Floating Ceremony led by Her Holiness Keishu Shinso, the spiritual head of Shinnyo-en. The ceremony remembers those who gave their lives in conflict, allows for reflection on the memories of loved ones and dedicates prayers for a peaceful and harmonious future. Just as the waters of the Pacific merge with each ocean, the wish for peace and happiness extends from Hawaii across the globe.
